Ila Alasepo Recipe. (Okra Soup)

Imagine in front of you; a plate filled with okra soup, decorated with assorted meat, ponmo, prawn, and panla fish, ah! My, my!🙉😋😋🙆. Okay, calm down, don’t imagine too much. Sit down, let’s talk.

Okra soup is one of the most popular dishes in Nigeria. It’s made from okra plant, which is chopped into small bits and cooked with palm oil, along side various other ingredients. It is rich in proteins, magnesium, vitamins, and has a whole lot of health benefits such as helping to control the blood sugar level. It is rich in folate which is a very important nutrient for pregnant women and can also help maintain a healthy heart.

I’m sure someone is already shouting Yehh! Ordinary okra!🙆 Yes dear, it’s not a lie, okra is that good for you!👍

Personally, okra is on the top five soups on my food hall of fame😌. I love it because, with just little effort and little time, I can make myself a great healthy meal. Whenever I wish to treat myself to a nice meal after a long tedious work, Fufu and Okra’s the way out! Ah, it’s the real definition of enjoyment! 😌😃😘. Don’t blame me, I’m just being the typical Yoruba girl that I am. 🙈😁😁😋

Okra can be made into a sauce as an accompaniment with stew, or made as a soup on its own. The latter is what we’re doing today. So put on your apron, get into kitchen, and get ready to cook wonders with me! 😃🍴🍳🍜

INGREDIENTS

-1 derica of okra
-Few Cocoyam leafs, or any other thick vegetable
-Two pieces of roasted fishes
-½kilo Chicken
– 2 tbsp Crayfish
-10 bells of fresh pepper (rodo)
-1 big bulb of onion
-¼ bottle red oil
-Salt
-Seasoning cubes


PROCEDURES

  1. Rinse chicken and season with salt, seasoning cube, onions, ginger, garlic, thyme, curry powder, etc. You’re wondering why the ingredients for the chicken are this much🌝? Well, we’re going to make use of the stock that comes out from it. You can keep some of the stock in the fridge also to save for other foods you want to cook in the future. But don’t over-season the chicken out of excitement 🤭, if you do, your chicken will be too salty and spicy😱😫.
  2. Wash okra individually under running water, chop into small pieces and place aside.
  3. Rinse the cocoyam leaf with warm water and salt to kill germs hanging on the vegetable. Set aside too.
  4. When the chicken is cooked and tender enough, take out ½ cup from the stock and pour into a pot.
  5. Pour in the chopped onions and grated pepper. Add a cup of water to the stock and place on fire to boil for 3 minutes.
  6. While it’s boiling, pour in the chopped Okra and vegetable. Whisk for about 20 seconds, then leave to cool for up to 5 mins. You can also choose to whisk the okra before putting it on fire, it’s my personal trick. 😉
  7. As it cooks, put in the boiled chicken, fish, ponmo and crayfish and whatever other ingredients you may have. Add red oil and seasoning and allow to cook for about 3 more minutes.
  8. Stir and enjoy the beautiful aroma welling from your ila alasepo, it’s one of the best parts of cooking 😋😀😊😋😋
  9. Serve into a plate and eat with hot Eba, Semo, or any other swallow you would like.
  10. Enjoy the delicious soupy ride! 🤗🤗
